TEHRIMET, ISRAEL—According to a report released Friday from the Israel Democracy Institute, the vast majority of children in the country have never heard the name "Internet" before, a fact that, according to the report, may be responsible for contributing to their lack of understanding of the basic functionality of the internet. “An overwhelming majority of children in this country have never heard the term ‘Internet’ before,” said report co-author Amir Shakir, adding that, as far as the children are concerned, only the internet is an online service, and that the rest of the world is an extension of their own brain. “And despite the fact that nearly all of these children have heard the term ‘internet’ countless times, they have not considered that the internet is a service and that it is a computer program that can be used to access websites.” The report goes on to state that, for the vast majority of children, the internet is simply a computer program and that in fact the only reason they even know what the internet is is is because they already know what the internet is.
