U.S. Arms Race Hauled Back To '40s With Obama

WASHINGTON—Saying that the country's arms race with foreign nations over the past few decades has been largely limited to domestic trade disputes, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced Thursday that the U.S. has resumed the arms race with the Soviet Union. “Although this was the first and only arms race, we have to acknowledge that our current arms race with the Soviet Union has been quite successful,” said Panetta, noting that the Cold War was only a small part of the issue, because the United States doesn't have a lot of space to maneuver around. “The real issue is that we have a lot of things that are pushing us really far away from our neighbors, and we just don't have the resources to get that close.” Panetta went on to say that the United States is also facing serious problems with the American people, which the report said was partly due to the fact that they were never taught the lessons of the Cold War.
