New Report Finds Most Tougher Gun Laws In Recent Years

WASHINGTON—According to a report published Thursday by the Department of Justice, the vast majority of the strict gun laws passed in the U.S. since the mid-1990s have been built with the help of a group of Republicans. “After the Newtown massacre, legislators responded by imposing strict gun control measures,” said the report’s lead author, Alan Burke, who noted that the seven states with the most restrictive gun laws between 2009 and 2012 were Republican-controlled. “The fact that most of these laws were passed after the shooting was far less of a factor.” At press time, the report’s authors added that if current trends continue, the 22 states with the fewest licensed firearms in 2013 will be the lowest in the nation’s history.
