James Mattis Issues Ruling On Trump’s Nation-Building Plan For The Middle East

WASHINGTON—In a major escalation of the administration’s efforts to win the support of Middle Easterners, Defense Secretary James Mattis issued a ruling Tuesday on President Trump’s plans for the region. “This is a major step in our effort to build a strong Middle Eastern community in the region,” said Mattis, issuing his first major policy pronouncement since the president’s early February executive order on the plan to establish a secure, prosperous Middle Eastern nation ruling over a vast swath of the Middle East. “We are confident that the White House’s plan will be a major success, and we look forward to working with President Trump to implement it.” Mattis later issued a more detailed statement on the president’s plan for his nation’s Middle East, saying that in order to be effective, the president must establish a stable, prosperous democracy in the region whose government is not beholden to the whims of one despotic ruler.
